ABOUT US.
Founded in 1899, the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW) is a nonprofit veterans service organization comprised of eligible combat veterans and military service members from the active, guard and reserve forces. Originally founded by veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902), our mission from the beginning has been to secure and protect the rights and benefits of America’s service members and veterans. Today, with more than 1.5 million VFW and Auxiliary members located in nearly 6,000 Posts worldwide, we are proud to proclaim “NO ONE DOES MORE FOR VETERANS” than the VFW, which remains dedicated to veterans’ service, legislative advocacy, and military and community service programs. For more information, or to join, visit our website at vfw.org.
THE OPPORTUNITY.
For service members and veterans, the transition from military to civilian life can often be a disorienting and isolating experience. Many veterans struggle to find their place in the civilian world, leading to increased feelings of loneliness and isolation. According to a 2019 Department of Veterans Affairs report, 17 veterans a day die by suicide – a fact that the VFW finds unacceptable. As an organization comprised solely of combat veterans, we know firsthand the unique struggles service members, veterans, and their families face, and we remain dedicated to ensuring no veteran suffers alone.
Our Commitment.
From buddy checks and changing the narrative and stigma surrounding mental health, to fighting food insecurity and providing vital VA claims assistance to ensure veterans receive the benefits and compensation they’ve earned and deserve, the VFW’s programs and services continuously evolve to meet the ever-changing needs of our nation’s veterans. Each and every day, the VFW’s network of nearly 6,000 VFW Posts across the globe work to provide veterans camaraderie, purpose, and the support they need to thrive.
