We believe by bringing neighbors together, we can cultivate a kinder world where everyone has a neighborhood they can rely on.
Nextdoor connects neighbors to each other—and to everything nearby: Local businesses, services, news updates, recommendations and stuff for sale from the people down the block.
Building connections in the real world is a universal human need. That truth, and the reality that neighborhoods are among the most important communities in our lives, have been guiding principles for Nextdoor since the beginning.
By signing up for free at Nextdoor, you’re automatically connected to everyone in or around your neighborhood. Whether you need to find a local handyman or a lost dog, you can reach out to neighbors in an instant.
With research showing that COVID-19 has had a negative impact on mental health, Nextdoor created a global effort in July 2020 to leverage their platform to unite neighbors and help address loneliness and social isolation. Called the KIND (Kindness Is Nextdoor) Challenge, the campaign encourages neighbors to reach out online to build deeper connections in their neighborhoods. The effort also kicked off partnerships with leading researchers to look at ways to break the cycle of loneliness and create a more welcoming climate around the world, one neighborhood at a time.
Check out this recent global study from Nextdoor along with Brigham Young University, the University of Manchester, and Swinburne University of Technology, which found that knowing as few as six neighbors can lead to a decrease in loneliness and social anxiety, particularly as it relates to Covid. The study also looked at the impact of small acts of kindness in communities. The acts conducted ranged from checking in on neighbors, to providing helpful information, to more tangible support like mowing a neighbor’s lawn or delivering groceries. While 1 in 10 participants said they experienced feelings of loneliness at the start of the study, the number was reduced to 1 in 20 after the study was completed. This outcome is particularly remarkable because participants reduced their risk with relatively small, simple steps.
Nextdoor is committed to reducing loneliness and social isolation by connecting neighbors. We hope this research will continue to raise awareness on the power of social connections through our KIND Challenge.
We are proud to join partners like The Humana Foundation in the Far From Alone campaign to help neighbors—and the world—feel socially connected and #FarFromAlone.
